Stress is the “wear and tear” our bodies experience as we adjust to our continually changing environment – it has physical, spiritual and emotional effects on us and can create positive or negative feelings.
As a positive influence, stress can help compel us to action; it can result in a new awareness and an exciting new perspective. As a negative influence, it can result in feelings of distrust, rejection, anger and depression, which in turn can lead to health problems such as headaches, upset stomach, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart dis-ease and stroke.
With the death of a loved one, the birth of a child, a job promotion, or a new relationship, we experience stress as we readjust our lives. In so adjusting to different circumstances, stress will help or hinder us depending on how we react to it.
Resilience forms the basis of well being – the counter balance to the negative impacts of stress. It creates a sense of who we are and provides
strategies for coping with life’s ups and downs. It is shown that building resilience not only changes your life outcomes, it increases your life
expectancy. Feeling self confident, self worth, self esteem and self value all have one thing in common – the self. Having worth is the natural outcome of knowing the self and gaining trust that we can maintain a sense of who we are despite lifes ups and downs and the people we meet.
This workshop is designed to simultaneously build resilience and get clarity on the sense of self using colour and art. It is truly holistic in that it incorporates all aspects of resilience, both in each session and over the four weeks. It will teach mindfulness, craft techniques and develop a process of thinking to problem solve through life’s issues and give you a toolbox of strategies that you can use to help yourself.
The help with clarity in understanding ourselves we use Hazy Dayz emotion cards. These identify the 8 elements of the self which are based on traditional psychological frameworks, chakras and traditional Chinese medicine.
Each week we will explore two colours that are complimentary. The better we understand this, the more we are able to gain confidence to tackle life. Resilience is also developed and this group uses the four basic elements. The first of these is physical where we take you through a journey in the environment with which we work and the samples of food that will stimulate your sense of taste, smell and touch. The second is social where you have the opportunity to sit with others and contribute as much or little to the conversations, practice giving through supporting others and taking time for yourself and reflect on gratitude to self and others. The third is mental where we will practice problem solving through a range of craft based projects and achieve self mastery through completion of tasks and develop strategies to ride through any emotions stirred through memories. The fourth aspect is emotional where we create an experience of positive emotions, learn how to refocus our thoughts to bring calmness and find ways to promote positive thinking and abundance.
The colours of blue and orange, we use paper and mixed media art to explore communication, emotions and developing trust.
The colours of pink, black and white, we use the environment and natural products in art to consider change, love of self and developing compassion.
The colours of purple and yellow, we use fibres and pattern to look at our philosophical views of the world we live in, the balance of giving and receiving and goal setting.
The colours of red and green, we use recycled products and a variety of textures to look at safety, relationships and social supports.
